The Mark Of A True Gentleman

No one at Athens will take home more hardware than Michael Phelps. He has seven medals already and will pick up number eight when the US Medley Relay team wins. This is almost a certainty. The US swim team has never failed in this event since it was added to the Olympic games.

Now Phelps has something else. He has won a reputation for being a class act. He has done so by offering teammate Ian Crocker the opportunity to stand on the podium instead of himself. Given the history of these two men, the gesture is remarkable.

Phelps and Crocker have been among the two best in the US at swimming for at least the last two years. At a recent meet, Crocker beat Phelps by less than 1/10th of a second. Phelps took this very personnally. He kept a poster of Crocker on his wall just to work himself into a proper lather before he went to practice. Perhaps Phelps credits Crocker, to a certain extent, for his success.

In this year's games, Phelps has one-upped Crocker not once, but twice. Now he steps aside, so that Crocker will qualify for an additional medal at these games.

Now Michael Phelps is more than just a champion, he is also a sportsman and a gentleman. Well done, Mr. Phelps. Well done.

As you may or may not already be aware, members of the Watcher's Council hold a vote every week on what they consider to be the most link-worthy pieces of writing around... per the Watcher's instructions, I am submitting one of my own posts for consideration in the upcoming nominations process.
Here is the most recent winning council post, here is the most recent winning non-council post, here is the list of results for the latest vote, and here is the initial posting of all the nominees that were voted on.
